Media delivery systems industry action group the bmcoforum has announced that it has finalised the next release of its implementation profiles of OMA BCAST enabler for mobile TV.

The new bmcoforum implementation profiles of the OMA BCAST enabler are designed to fulfil what bmco believes are the current market demands of convergence, in the perspective of 2010 commercial mobile TV products.

Broadcast service launches.

Among the new features, bmcoforum emphasises the support of additional mechanisms for the Smartcard Profile based service and content protection; the support of new Service Guide facilities for broadcast and unicast access; the inclusion of subtitling tools; 3GPP Fast Content Switching among 3G real time (TV) channels; and improvements enabling convergence of mobile TV over broadcast and unicast networks.

During 2007 and 2008 bmcoforum set up its first package of recommendations for implementation profiles of the OMA BCAST enablers including those functions of OMA BCAST that have been agreed between operators, system and handset vendors to be a top priority in early deployments of mobile TV Broadcast based on DVB-H and 3G cellular networks. Subsequently, this package became part of the commercial mobile TV Broadcast services in Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland which were launched in 2008.

Since the early definition of the bmcoforum profiles for BCAST 1.0 in 2008, the industry group believes that market demand in terms of use cases and related standard tools has evolved.
