Singapore slings TV2GO DVB-H mobile TV trial with interactivity

Leading Asian broadcaster Singapore Digital has announced the extension to its TV2GO DVB-H mobile TV trial, which begun in June 2007, to the end of November 2008.

This next phase of Singapore Digital's TV2GO DVB-H trial is designed to provide viewers with additional content, plus interactive functionality. Trialists will have the opportunity to road-test interactive chat-room services, experience teletext-to-mobile, as well as interact with real-time financial services.

The technological basis, and indeed interactive component, of the TV2GO DVB-H trial will be made possible thanks to a digital interactive platform from Sofia Digital integrated with the Nokia DVB-H broadcast platform, Mobile Broadcast Solution (MBS).

As part of the mobile TV trial, Singapore Digital will conduct a number of additional user studies and will also incorporate a range of further coverage and technology appraisals.

Available to anyone in Singapore with a DVB-H- enabled handset, TV2GO will offer two new mobile TV channels in addition to the news, music and entertainment content already on offer.

As part of the TV2GO trial extension, Singapore Digital will work with Nokia to allow select customers to experience the TV2GO service on the Nokia N96 multimedia handset.

According to Singapore Digital CEO, Giulio Dorrucci, the TV2GO DVB-H trial extension provides a valuable opportunity to extend the trial's technical capabilities and obtain market feedback from viewers on new applications and content.

"As part of the trial, we are conducting a number of technology studies to ensure the mobile TV transmission is of the highest quality in a number of locations--from residential streets and high-density apartment blocks, to subway lines and shopping centres," he said. "Market studies and focus groups will also be engaged to improve our understanding of viewers' preferred content, including when and where they prefer to use it. The goal is a premium-quality mobile TV service, delivering a rich mix of viewable content to a variety of indoor and outdoor locations--representing true mobility."
