Eurosport scores with mobile TV coverage of 2010 Olympic Winter Games
10 March, 2010 - 09:15Viewing data revealed by Eurosport has shown that audience ratings for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games broke all-time online records with particular strong mobile platform results.
Overall 120 million viewers watched the Games on Eurosport and Eurosport HD for more than 11 hours each with the five most popular events shown being ski-jumping, biathlon, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and Nordic combined skiing. Across its mobile network of 15 sites in 13 languages, Eurosport recorded almost 1 million users over the two weeks of the Games with just under 250,000 daily users using the an iPhone and Android app.
The news is a coup for Eurosport who in February made the British Eurosport and British Eurosport 2 TV channels available on the iPhone. The service is based on the Eurosport Player application developed for UK iPhone owners which enabled users to access the live action via 3G and Wi-Fi, increasing the opportunities to access the channel's content via mobile devices.
In addition to Eurosport's live broadcast of the Winter Olympics, other sports content available through 2010 will include French Open tennis, Tour de France, MotoGP, World Superbikes, British Superbikes and the World Touring Car Championships, among other international events featured on British Eurosport and British Eurosport 2 TV channels.
Eurosport launched its first iPhone application in July 2009 featuring breaking sports news, live scoring and results from its internet platform. The original application, available for iPhone and iPod touch, generated 800,000 unique users in January 2010 alone.
Commented Eurosport Group Chairman, Laurent-Eric Le Lay, said: "Sport is the perfect genre to enjoy through exciting functionality, enabling fans to watch their favourite sporting events wherever they are, ensuring they never miss a second of the action. This new app launch will further reinforce Eurosport's presence in the online community, making the best sport entertainment more accessible than ever."
